Northbury By-Election – Simon Anthony

On Thursday November 28th, following a resignation on Barking and Dagenham council, residents of Northbury ward will vote for their new councillor.

Simon Anthony, the Northbury candidate for the Green Party

Simon Anthony (or Simon Ronald Anthony) is the Green Party candidate for Northbury, previously standing for the seat when it was created in 2022 and for the Barking parliamentary seat in July this year.

Simon had the support of the Muslim Vote campaign, due to his stances on peace in Palestine and equality in the UK, and thousands of residents, increasing our vote share by 11.9% and beating the Conservative Party.

He is retired after a varied career in science and technology. He has worked as an engineer at the BBC, writing software for those with special educational needs, and as a college lecturer. He met his Iranian wife while living in Australia and together they have four children and two grandchildren.

SIMON’S PLEDGES

Ensure no pensioner goes cold – an assistance fund for additional winter fuel support

Labour’s first “change” in government was to cut winter fuel payments. AgeUK research and statistics on pension credit in Barking and Dagenham show that a lot of pensioners may be unable to heat their homes. Our proposed scheme is £100 one-off payments to keep people warm.

Divest the councils’ pension scheme funding fossil fuels and those complicit in genocide

We want our money invested ethically. Evidence from Friends of the Earth, Platform and the Palestinian Solidarity Campaign allege that this is not the case with Barking and Dagenham Council’s Local Government Pension Fund, and we want this investigated and divested.

Make Barking cleaner and greener and real scrutiny of our Labour Council

Our members are already organising cleanups of the Roding and reporting flytipping, but we have to build pride and community in our area. We need a councillor who doesn’t follow the Labour whip to provide real scrutiny to Labour’s decisions.
