Thames View By-Election – Paul David Powlesland

On Thursday July 31st, following a resignation on Barking and Dagenham council, residents of Thames View ward will vote for their new councillor.

Paul David Powlesland is the Green Party candidate for Thames View, in a contest identified by tactical voting websites as being between the Green Party and Labour.

Founder of the River Roding Trust and Lawyers for Nature, Paul cares deeply for the town of Barking and championing projects to protect and restore nature in the area. He regularly gets stuck in to tree planting, cleaning a recent oil spill, and organising regular river cleanups – and street cleanups in Central Barking.

Paul is also an environmental barrister, tackling environmental injustices with a skillset highly adaptable to being the first Green, and independent minded councillor, amongst 50 obedient Labour councillors.

If elected, he will be both the scrutiny and community champion that Thames View and Barking and Dagenham Council needs.

Paul’S PLEDGES

BETTER HOMES for barking – AND a NEW HEALTH CENTRE

Get repairs done. Stop Labour’s estate demolition being used as a cover for reducing council housing and rent hikes. We need a new health centre.

REVERSE LABOUR’S STREET CLEANING CUTS

Flytipping and street litter is out of control in areas of the borough. This isn’t the time, Labour, to cut the street cleaning budget. Reverse the cut.

SAFER COMMUNITIES

Paul knows from his experience of multiple burglaries, victims don’t always get justice. He will fight for community policing that’s properly resourced, more accessible and responsive.

ETHICAL PENSION FUND POLICY

Paul will hold Labour to divesting their local government pension fund pot from extremely unethical activities like fossil fuel extraction and human rights abuses. We should not support those complicit in the Gaza genocide.
